Papers of Gretchen Harshbarger, 1926-1989.

The papers consist of clippings, correspondence, photographs, writings, and other documents pertaining to Harshbarger's professional activities as well as information about her education, family, and awards. Included also are landscape designs she developed for Iowa City clients, including plans for churches, the city of Iowa City, a school, and many residential properties.

Professional landscape architect, author, and photographer; author of The flower family album (1940) and McCall's garden book (1968); garden editor of Household magazine and American homes; president of the Garden Writers' Association of American and the American Hemerocallis Society; recipient of numerous national and local awards for her contributions to horticulture. A resident of Iowa City, Iowa, Harshbarger is noted for founding Project Green in that community. She died in 1989. ...
